  4.                        So Human an Animal

  7.      Since human beings are as much the product of their total
  8. environment as of their genetic endowment,it is theoretically
  9. possible to improve the lot of man on earth by manipulating the
  10. environmental factors that shape his nature and condition his
  11. destiny. In the modern world, urbanization and technology are
  12. certainly among the most important of these factors and for this
  13. reason it is deplorable that so little is done to study their
  14. effects on human life.
  15.      We claim to live in a scientific era, but the truth is that,
  16. as presently managed, the scientific enterprise is too lopsided to
  17. allow science to be of much use in the conduct of human affairs. We
  18. have accumulated an immense body of knowledge about mater, and
  19. powerful techniques to control and exploit the external world.
  20. However, we are grossly ignorant of the effects likely to result
  21. from these manipulations; we behave often as if we were the last
  22. generation to inhabit the earth.
  23.      We have aquired much information about the body machine and
  24. some skill in controlling it's responses and correcting it's
  25. defects. In contrast, we know almost nothing of the processes
  26. through which every man converts his potentialities into his
  27. individuality. Yet without this knowledge, social and technological
  28. innovations are not likely to serve worthwhile human ends.
  29.      The  "square" life, as usually understood, is stifling and
  30. thwarts the responses essential for man's sanity and for the
  31. healthy development of human potentialities. All thoughtful persons
  32. worry about the future of the children who will have to spend their
  33. lives under the absurd social and environmental conditions we are
  34. thoughtlessly creating; even more disturbing is the fact that the
  35. physical and mental characteristics of mankind are being shaped now
  36. by dirty skies and cluttered streets, anonymous high rises and
  37. amorphous urban sprawl, social attitudes which are more concerned
  38. with things than with men.
  39.      Young people have good reason to reject the values that govern
  40. technicized societies; but protesting against conventional patterns
  41. of behavior or withdrawing from the present economic system will
  42. not suffice to change the suicidal course on which we are now
  43. engaged. A constructive approach cannot be only political or
  44. social. It demands that we supplement the knowledge of things and
  45. of the body machine with a science of life.
